The Shell Oil Company Technical Scholarship Program focuses on developing talent in the engineering and geosciences field by providing assistance to graduating high school seniors who have expressed an interest in the energy industry and demonstrated an aptitude in mathematics and science.

Shell will sponsor up to 20 one-year awards of $2,500 for graduating high school seniors enrolling in engineering or geosciences at universities identified by Shell.  Upon successful completion of first year studies and other criteria established by Shell, the recipient may be eligible to receive a four-year renewable award of $5,000 annually.

Presidential Scholars Program Candidate

Lauren Liou has been named as a candidate in the 2012 United States Presidential Scholars Program by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the United States Department of Education.  Of the nearly 3.2 million high school seniors graduating this year, Lauren is one of approximately 3,000 students to receive this invitation.  Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 48th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.  Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.  The 3,000 candidates were selected for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment.  The U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May.

We are very proud of Lauren to be selected as one of the 3,000 candidates.  She will apply to compete for the Presidential Scholar, of which there will only be 141.  Whether she is chosen or not, we are happy that she has been named a candidate!

Who meets groups upon arrival? Every SST bus has a full-time SST Tour Director who will meet you at your arrival airport  In rare cases, your tour director may not be able to meet you, but a SST representative will be available to accompany you to meet your tour director. Alternatively, groups busing from their hometown will be met by their SST Tour Director at their first scheduled activity.

What is a private group? For large groups that want the privacy of their own tour bus and SST Tour Director, SST offers the private group option. The Program Fee for a private group is based on a minimum number of actual paying participants per bus and is subject to adjustments if the minimum is not met. Depending on the size of your group, it may be necessary to divide into smaller groups due to limited space at hotels, restaurants and sightseeing venues, as well as on airplanes, trains and buses.

What is a consolidated group? Consolidation provides small groups with the best value. SST’s Program Fees are based on a minimum of 35 paying participants. To qualify for SST’s Program Fees, it is usually necessary to combine a number of smaller groups into a larger one. Your group may therefore be combined with others that are not necessarily of the same age range. If SST is unable to consolidate groups on their requested tour, we will offer a comparable tour and apply the new Program Fee and airport fees. In order to consolidate your tour, SST requests some flexibility with your date and destination choices. If we fail to offer a comparable tour, participants will receive a full refund.

Can my itinerary change? It may be necessary for SST to modify the order in which sites are visited, alter the duration of stay in a city, arrange ground transportation to an alternate airport, etc. This may also involve a change in the departure, arrival or return dates of a tour. SST makes every effort to ensure that the new departure date will be within one to two days of the requested dates. In rare cases, it may be necessary to move dates by up to three days within the requested departure dates. On certain dates, especially holidays, or due to flight arrival or departure times some tour inclusions may be unavailable. In this case, SST reserves the right to substitute inclusions at its discretion.

Provide your complete name as it appears on your travel credentials (e.g. birth certificate, passport or state-issued identification. If your identification includes a middle name or initial, be sure to list exactly the same way on your application. This will be the name issued on your airline tickets. Please check the spelling of your name on all correspondence as any corrections to your name made after 110 days prior to departure will incur a minimum $100 fee.

Texas A&M-Kingsville to reinstate gas engineering program in August

KINGSVILLE — "We were internationally famous for that program," said university President Steven Tallant.

And now, officials and alumni say, it's time to reclaim that recognition by helping meet the current demands of the oil and gas industry.

The Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas formation is impacting South Texas, and the region will need qualified petroleum and natural gas engineers who know about designing pipelines and taking natural gas to market, university officials and engineering alumni said.

"We've got substantial demand out there," said John Chisholm, assistant dean for the university's Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering.

Steve Herbst, a 1958 Texas A&I University petroleum and natural gas engineering graduate, said industry needs the program to come back.

"There's a big void in qualified people in that curriculum," said Herbst, who also invests in oil and gas ventures through his Corpus Christi business Rainbow Investments Co. Inc.

Wayne King, a 1959 Texas A&I University petroleum and natural gas engineering graduate, said the program can help revive what the university built up years ago.

"It's been our legacy in South Texas to be tied to oil and gas production," said King, a retired senior vice president at Valero Energy Corp. in San Antonio.

In the late 1990s, the bachelor's program had low enrollment and that caused the program shut down, Chisholm said.

Industry leaders, some of whom advise the college on skilled workforce needs, have told university officials they want graduates specialized in the niche field of natural gas engineering, Chisholm said.

Without trained engineers in natural gas, university officials said, many industry leaders train engineers specialized in other engineering areas, such as mechanical and civil, to work with natural gas projects.

Chisholm said he gets about five phone calls a week from people asking about the bachelor's of natural gas program's return.

The university maintained its master's program in gas engineering throughout the years.

The new bachelor's program should launch in August with a minimum of 20 students, which likely will consist of freshmen and transfer students, Chisholm said.

By 2017, the university wants a minimum of 60 students in the natural gas program.

Program resources, such as faculty and laboratory space, already exist, officials said.

"It was going to be very easy to establish the undergraduate courses," said Chisholm, who is coordinating the bachelor program addition.

Tallant said the university's budget didn't increase with the addition of the bachelor's program.

King said many graduates of the former program have gone on to be executives of major companies. This program can renew that legacy, he said.

"We'll turn them out again, and they'll be drawn there."

Program Criteria

- Transfer students need a minimum 2.5 grade-point average in previous college-level work.

- Students between a 2.0 to 2.5 grade-point average can enter the program as pre-engineering students, according to university policy. Once they progress in the degree program, students can be considered for engineering program classification.

- Entering freshmen must have an SAT score of 970 or higher
